The ongoing series between the West Indies and India provided many opportunities to the youngsters. The 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut for the Test side, where many new names like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar were also present. However, Jaiswal was given a go straightaway and he responded with a century on debut.
Playing his first ever game for India, Jaiswal showed why he belongs at this level by hitting a magnificent century (171) and his performance proved to be crucial for India in winning the first Test. His performance earned him accolades from fans and pundits alike. Many opined that he is a special player and one for the future, and former South African batter AB de Villiers was of a similar opinion. The veteran opined that he knew Jaiswal was special ever since the first time he saw him play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
"It’s not every day that a youngster comes out in a Test match in his very first game and scores a hundred. The very first time I watched him play in the IPL, I thought there’s something really special. You can always look at the guy and see how much time he has while facing the ball. He’s got time when he’s playing. The pace of the ball is not going to bother him. Even when he’s playing spin, it looks like he’s got time," AB de Villiers said in a video on his YouTube channel.
'He’s a very talented youngster' - AB de Villiers on Yashasvi Jaiswal
Furthermore, de Villiers heaped even more praise on Jaiswal over his ability to take his time when playing his shots and even revealed how happy he was to see the 21-year-old score a ton on his debut.
"He just looks like he’s got time to make decisions while other players might seem rushed. He’s a very talented youngster and hot prospect for the future for India. I am very happy to watch him score a hundred in that first Test match," de Villiers said.
