A humdinger of a game which sailed both ways in the end saw Sri Lanka picking up a memorable victory against India in the Super four stages. This is India’s second loss in the Super four stages and their chances of qualification to the finals looks bleak at the moment.

India were dealt with some early blows with the wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma stepped up with a stupendous knock of 72 off 41 balls under pressure to get things back in place. Suryakumar Yadav played a handy cameo while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant showed intent to score quickly.

With wickets tumbling in the end, India settled for a total of 173 for 8 on the board in their 20 overs. Dilshan Madushanka proved to be a revelation in the Sri Lankan bowling attack with 3 for 24 while Chamika Karunaratne bowled an economical spell.

Sri Lankan openers cut loose in the powerplay

The Sri Lankan top order started the run chase brilliantly and their positive mindset was quite evident on display. They latched on anything that was outside off stump and full and had a productive powerplay especially with Pathum Nissanka doing the bulk of the scoring. Kusal Mendis joined the party soon and a splendid opening partnership of 97 for the first wicket setup the run chase quite well.

Nissanka was the first to get to the half century land mark while Mendis followed him soon. Yuvzendra Chahal provided glimpses of hope by getting rid of Nissanka and Charith Asalanka in his third over and returned to pick up Mendis in his final over. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka played the situation exceedingly well getting the odd boundaries and kept the required rate under control.

In the end, with 7 needed of 6 balls, Arshdeep Singh bowled an exceptional final over by hitting th yorkers continously. However, it was too little too late and an overthrow was enough for the Sri Lankan side to get over the line.
