Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is impressed with Punjab Kings (PBKS) wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma's performance in Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL).
Punjab are currently sixth in the IPL 2023 points table, having won five of their nine matches. While PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan's consistent top-order performances have been key to the team's success, one player who has emerged with his astounding power-hitting abilities is Jitesh. In the ongoing season, the 29-year-old has scored 190 runs in nine innings so far with a strike rate of 162.39.
Shastri said that he believes that Jitesh might be called up to the Indian team anytime as he is a superb player lower down the order. He also praised his wicketkeeping abilities, noting that he is excellent and courageous.
“He's the find of the IPL. Rishabh Pant is unfortunately not available but this guy can enter the Indian team anytime. Lower down the order, he's a todu (fantastic) player. His keeping is great, and he is fearless," Shastri said.
The 60-year-old also praised Dhawan's efforts in the tournament so far. He also stated that the services of Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran are also a big plus for the side.
"You're talking about Shikhar, he missed 2-3 games with injury, but his intent is amazing. He scored 20-25, but the intent with which he plays is amazing. And then of course, they have (Liam) Livingstone and (Sam) Curran,” Shastri added.
Meanwhile, Punjab will lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the 46th match of the IPL 2023 on Wednesday, May 3 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium. PBKS are coming after a four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings while MI registered a six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in their previous encounter.
