'I don't know if anyone can break such a record' - Sourav Ganguly predicts Virat Kohli's ODI century record to stand the test of time

India faced off with New Zealand in the first semifinal of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and defeated them quite comfortably by 70 runs to secure their place in the final of the marquee event.

During the match, modern great and India’s superstar batter, Virat Kohli scored his 50th ODI century to break Sachin Tendulkar’s 49-ton record. Kohli displayed his batting prowess and accumulated a brilliant 117 off 113 balls with nine fours and two sixes.

Kohli has scored 691 runs at an average of 115.16 and a strike rate of over 89 in the tournament, making him the highest run-getter. Kohli's remarkable achievement and exceptional performance have left fans and experts alike in awe.

After the game, former BCCI chief and Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly spoke on Virat’s achievement and said that he doesn't think anyone would be able to break Virat’s record now as he still has a few more years to play in international cricket.

“I don't know if anyone can break such a record and Virat Kohli has not finished playing yet. He is only 35 and he will play more for India. It is a monumental achievement,” Ganguly said with ANI.

He said that he didn't think that anyone would be able to break Sachin’s 40 ODI tons record. “I have played with Sachin all the time when he got to 49, we thought how big is that and he (Kohli) passed it. My congratulations to him also on the way he batted in this World Cup," Ganguly added.

Ganguly praised the team’s overall performance and wished them good luck for the final of the marquee event as they are set to play the winner of the second semifinal which is being played between Australia and South Africa at the Eden Garden in Kolkata on Sunday, November 19.

"It has been fascinating how the team has played in this World Cup. It is just unreal and fantastic to watch. Good wishes to every member of the team for the final match," he added.
