Axar Patel was awarded Player of the Match as he helped Delhi Capitals register their second win of the Indian Premier League 2023 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, April 24 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The southpaw put his all-round skills on display as he scored 34(34) with the bat and picked 2/21 with the ball to help DC register a narrow win by 7 runs.
After his magnificent all-round show, Patel shared a hilarious moment from the dressing room before he came out to bat. In the first innings, DC suffered a dramatic collapse as they lost three wickets in the eighth over against Washington Sundar. Revealing the drama from the dressing room during the action-packed over, Patel said that he had ordered a coffee and had to leave it like that only and came out to bat in a hurry.
“I had no idea since I had ordered a coffee. I left the glass just like that since I got to know that the team lost three wickets in an over. It was nice to get that partnership since we knew if we score some runs it'll give us a chance. It's still there with the packing (laughs when asked about the coffee),” said Patel at the post-match presentation.
DC were aiming for a good total as they were 57/2 after 7 overs with captain David Warner (21* off 18) and Sarfaraz Khan (10* off 8) at the crease. However, things turned pretty quickly for the visitors as Washington Sundar claimed the wickets of Warner, Sarfaraz and Aman Hakim Khan in the same over giving away just five runs. As a result, DC were 62/5 after 8 overs with Patel and Manish Pandey coming to the crease.
Axar Patel dismissed Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram
The duo added 69 runs off 59 balls for the sixth wicket to take Delhi to a total of 144/9 in the first innings. In the second innings, SRH were going well in their chase as they were 67/1 after 11 overs with Mayank Agarwal (48* off 37) and Rahul Tripathi (11* off 16) at the crease.
However, Axar Patel dismissed the well-set Agarwal for 49 in the 12th over and further got the prized scalp of SRH captain Aiden Markram in the 15th over leaving SRH reeling at 85/5 after 14.1 overs. Heinrich Klaasen (31 off 19) and Washington Sundar (24* off 15) tried their best to take their side home but eventually fell seven runs short of DC’s total.
