‘I know England fear David Warner but he doesn’t have much of a record here’ - Michael Vaughan ahead of Ashes summer in England

Australia batter David Warner on his day, can take on any opponent by storm, but ahead of Ashes 2023, things are not looking good for the southpaw. There were a lot of discussion on whether the opener should travel to England, given his poor run of form in Test cricket, but nevertheless, Cricket Australia has backed him and also named Marcus Harris in the squad, who has a good record playing in English conditions. Thus, Warner’s place in the playing XI is not guaranteed at the moment.

Speaking about the cricketer, former England skipper Michael Vaughan stated that the Ben Stokes-led side does fear him but won’t be much bothered as his records in England are very poor. The 36-year-old has played 13 Test matches in England, scoring 651 runs in the process. In his last series against England, the opener had a season to forget, and thus, Vaughan believes that the home team will be much more relaxed this time around.

“The one thing with David Warner, I know England fear him, I do know that the captain worries that Warner could come out of the traps and just have one of those series. And he’s never done it really in England. He doesn’t have much of a record here. I know Anderson and Broad don’t mind bowling to him. But the modern game seems to be available to out-of-the-box thinking more than ever. He doesn’t have to open the batting,” Vaughan told The Age ahead of Ashes 2023.

Could they find a place for Warner at five or six? Vaughan questioned

Vaughan also pointed out that the Australia international is a terrific player of spin, and once the Duke ball is 30 overs old, it won’t swing much; thus, he believes that Warner can be a great addition to the squad in number five or six. 

“Warner is such a good player of spin. He’s such a good player when the ball that’s not moving. The ball won’t move after 30-odd overs in English conditions. Could they find a place for him at five or six?” Vaughan added.
