The former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that he feels sorry for Suryakumar Yadav after he was ignored in the first ODI match against Sri Lanka on January 10.
Suryakumar smashed a century in the third T20I against Sri Lanka recently, but is yet to cement his place in India's ODI squad. With Shreas Iyer showing great consistency across formats lately, the selection was always going to be a headache for the team management.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma hinted at Suryakumar's exclusion in the pre-match press conference on the eve of the match. However, the former Indian World Cup-winning cricketer did not agree with the management and felt that Suryakumar should have be in the ODI squad against Sri Lanka.
"And Surya, I'm so sorry, I feel bad for you my friend. Suryakumar Yadav not there in the team? You look at the top five and ask, who are the impact players there? Who are the guys who can take the game away from the opposition?" Srikkanth said in an interaction with Star Sports.
I would have picked three spinners: Kris Srikkanth
Srikkanth also questioned India's decision to not consider Washington Sundar in the playing eleven for the first ODI. Indian team started with Yuzvendra Chahal as specialist spinner and Axar Patel as spin all-rounder with three specialist pacers in form of Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik, and Mohamamed Siraj.
Srikkanth said that he is clueless on why Sundar did not play and also added that he would have picked three spinners and two pacers with Hardik as the sixth bowling option.
"I don't know why Washington Sundar is not playing. I would have picked three spinners, two pacers with Hardik Pandya as another option. That is why I keep saying that we need to develop more batting all-rounders, that is where India are missing out," Srikkanth asked.
