A quickfire start by the openers of the Lucknow Super Giants turned into a horror middle-order collapse for the home team, with Devdutt Padikkal, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran only managing to score 11 runs amongst themselves. With the home side electing to bat first, a score of 94/7 in 13 overs was unacceptable according to their own standards, with there being a massive threat of getting bundled out cheaply. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, being the main wrecker-in-chief.
Just when it seemed all but game over for LSG, two youngsters, Ayush Badoni and Arshad Khan, struck the highest eighth-wicket partnership in the history of the IPL, stitching a 42-ball 73-run stand together, which all of a sudden brought LSG back in the game. Courtesy of their rescuing act, LSG finished with 167/7 on the board.
Delhi Capitals: 50 runs in 5.1 overs
An expensive fourth over of the innings from Arshad Khan and a sloppy delivery from Krunal which went for five wides brought up DC's fifty, 31 deliveries into the chase.
Powerplay: Overs 0.1 to 6 (62/1)
Requiring 168 to win, DC scored only 30 runs in their first four overs, losing opener David Warner for 8 off 9. It seemed as if they had lost their chance to capitalise on the powerplay before the fifth and sixth overs produced 15 and 17 runs respectively, with Arshad and Krunal being on the receiving end.
Delhi Capitals: 100 runs in 12 overs
The four overs which followed the end of the powerplay had LSG pull things back quite drastically, with Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Yash Thakur not conceding a boundary during that period, with two relatively new batters in the middle with the likes of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Rishabh Pant. However, the 11th and 12th overs bowled by Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis, respectively, broke the shackles for DC as they were able to garner 15 and 10 runs from the two overs, respectively, to bring up DC's 100 in 12 overs, leaving 68 to win off the last eight.
Jake Fraser-McGurk: Half-century off 31 deliveries
People had only heard of the hard-hitting young batter from Australia, but he announced himself on the grandest of stages in his debut IPL match by notching up his maiden IPL fifty which included two fours and five sixes. Fraser-McGurk brought up his fifty by running a rare three off Yash's bowling.
End of the match:- Delhi Capitals: 170/4 in 18.1 overs
DC finally brought their back-to-back losing streak to an end as they registered their second victory in IPL 2024, with Tristan Stubbs and Shai Hope finishing the job for the away team.
