Andre Russell adjudged Andre Russell said:

"Not really, sometimes stuff pop on my Insta and I realise how well I am striking the ball. Shows that you are doing well. I have tried to react with whatever comes my way. Over the last 2 years, bowlers have their plans against me. I have been digging out the runs, and I know everyone has a plan for me. (On his journey with KKR) I was on the bench early on, and just tried to make myself useful. This franchise means a lot to me, what I did tonight was just a way to prove what this jersey means to me. (On Harshit Rana) Shows a lot about his character. He told me he wanted the last over, he claimed it and he came back strong after the first ball went for six," Russell said.

Winning skipper Shreyas Iyer said:

"Right from the 17th over, had butterflies in my stomach. Felt anything could happen in the last over. They needed 13 runs and we didn't have the most experienced bowler. But I had the belief in him, and I told him to back himself and it doesn't matter what happens. He was a bit nervous coming in, and I just looked him in the eye and told him 'this is your moment, buddy.' Told him to back himself and doesn't matter what happens in the game. They have such experience. Great to see Andre perform with bat and ball, and even Sunny was splendid with the ball. Fantastic to have them around. Always gives you motivation when you start with a win. This game also gives us a lot of learnings, there is a lot we will take from this ground. I think fielding is an area we need to improve on. It was so loud out there, it was difficult to signal to the other players from the deep," Iyer said.

Losing skipper Pat Cummins said:

"Close game in the end, wonderful game of cricket. Unfortunately didn't go our way. I thought for the most part, really happy with how we bowled. Obviously Dre Russ at the end there does what Dre Russ does, he's pretty hard to contain. Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job. You do your planning, you try to execute your best but a pretty tough guy to bowl to, played some good shots, couple of balls maybe we could have bowled a little bit differently but toughest job in cricket is bowling at someone like that in the end. It's one of those, goes one way or the other, amazing job by Klaas (Klaasen) and Shahbaz to get us back into the game and get us into that position. Who would have thought we'd get that close. Unfortunately a little bit too much. In a game where we didn't really pull it all together, we still almost competed against a very good side at their home venue, lots to be encouraged by, lot of good performers, a couple of points to work on also. Happy with how the toss went," Cummins said.

Wasim Jaffer is impressed by Narine

Match 3 of IPL 2024 will witness the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) hosting the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the scenic Eden Gardens on March 23.

Both teams experienced lackluster performances in the previous season, with the hosts securing the seventh spot and the visitors languishing at the bottom in tenth place, securing just four wins.

For KKR, Englishmen Jason Roy and Gus Atkinson have pulled out, citing personal reasons and workload management, respectively. The substitutes roped into the group in place of the aforementioned players are the current No. 2 T20I batter Phil Salt and the tall and skiddy Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera, respectively. However, Chameera recently incurred a quadriceps injury during the ODI series against Afghanisthan last month and is racing to regain fitness. There are also a few doubts floating around Shreyas Iyer's fitness.

Another new inclusion in the setup of KKR is Gautam Gambhir, who led the franchise to their two IPL truimphs in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and has come in, in the capacity of a mentor this time around. He will be working closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who himself is a shrewd tactician in the Indian domestic circuit. A few other notable incorporations are Manish Pandey, who returned to the franchise for INR 50 lakh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Sherfane Rutherford, Chetan Sakariya, and Ramandeep Singh. However, the one which takes the cake is the addition of Mitchell Starc, secured for an all-time auction high of INR 24.75 crore. KKR will be banking on this acquisition to bolster their relatively inexperienced fast-bowling group significantly.

The combination of hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batters Salt and Rahmanullah Gurbaz at the top presents an explosive prospect, especially considering their current red-hot form. Additionally, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell form a formidable duo, posing an intimidating challenge for bowlers during the death overs.

As far as SRH are concerned, there's a fair bit of trophy-winning pedigree in the echelons of their camp. With this being a fresh season, SRH would be hoping to get off to a positive start, with the 2023 World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins at the helm. Last year, Cummins led Australia to a couple of titles - the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup - but this will be Cummins' first assignment as a captain in the premier ranks of T20 cricket. They boast impressive depth in their overseas options. Sunrisers secured Hasaranga at a bargain in the auction, signing him for just INR 1.5 crore. He joins Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed as one of three spin-bowling all-rounders in the team.

With Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Glenn Phillips, and ex-SRH skipper Aiden Markram in the batting lineup, and Cummins, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Marco Jansen providing excellent all-round capabilities, they appear formidable, at least on paper. It would be wrong to overlook the appointment of their new head coach, Daniel Vettori, who takes over from Brian Lara in the role. Vettori marks the third head coach in as many seasons for Sunrisers.

Over the years, the Eden Gardens in Kolkata has been known for its high-scoring pitches, where teams consistently posted 200-plus totals and nearly chased them down successfully. However, with Gautam Gambhir's arrival, KKR is expected to revert to spin-friendly tracks reminiscent of his captaincy era. Gambhir would be expected to leverage his spin-bowling group consisting of the likes of Suyash Sharma, Mujeeb, Varun Chakravarthy, and Sunil Narine effectively. Despite its traditionally fast outfield, scores around 160-180 may now be considered winning totals at the venue this season.

With KKR having an upper hand over SRH by winning 16 out of the 25 matches they've played against each other, the contest at the Eden Gardens promises to be a gripping spectacle full of exciting cricketing prowess.
