IPL 2024 records 300 sixes in just 17 games, fastest ever in tournament's history

The previous best was 259 sixes in 17 matches in the 2023 season.

The Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) has been an action-packed season so far as fans have witnessed 16 riveting games in the mega event. The entertainment level has gone several notches higher in the ongoing 17th edition of the T20 extravaganza as record books have been shattered time and again. During the 17th game of the season between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), IPL 2024 added another feather in its cap as it recorded 300 sixes in just 17 games, the quickest ever in the history of the tournament.

Gujarat captain Shubman Gill registered the 300th maximum of the season as he smacked Harpreet Brar over his head on the last ball of the first over of the match. Notably, IPL 2023 earlier set the record for most sixes in the first 17 games with 259 sixes. However, courtesy of a couple of high-scoring games the sixes meter has been busy in the ongoing season etching its name in the record books.

Notably, match number 8 between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) saw several records being broken as SRH registered the highest total in the history of the league of 277/3. Mumbai also gave a strong reply scoring 246/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The match witnessed the highest aggregate of runs (523) in an IPL game as the 500-run mark was breached for the first time.

A total of 38 colossal hits were smashed during the game, the highest ever in a men’s T20 game, as batters cleared the fence with absolute ease. Furthermore, SRH registered joint second most sixes in an IPL innings (20). The Match 16 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals also turned out to be a six-hitting fest with KKR clobbering 18 maximums on their way to the second highest total in IPL history of 272/7.

Heinrich Klaasen topping six-hitting charts 

Among batters, SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen has hit the most sixes in the season so far with 17 maximums from three innings followed by Sunil Narine, Riyan Parag and Nicholas Pooran with 12 sixes each. With just 17 matches played so far, the remaining records once again face the danger of being breached as several big hitters of international cricket are ready to unleash their wrath on the bowlers.
