Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are among the four currently participating teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), who have not yet clinched the coveted trophy. However, they have one of the most passionate fanbases, who have supported the team through trials and tribulations. 

Once again, the Bangalore-based franchise will aim to go the distance and get their hands on the elusive trophy in the 17th edition of the cash-rich league.

After Virat Kohli relinquished captaincy ahead of IPL 2022, Faf du Plessis led from the front and took them to the playoffs in his first season as RCB's captain. In the last edition, RCB were in contention to reach the playoffs till their last league game, which was also the last game in the round-robin phase of the tournament. Faf and Co. needed to beat Gujarat Titans to secure the fourth spot. They managed to put on a stiff target of 198 for Gujarat to chase down. However, it didn't prove to be enough as Shubman Gill's sparkling century (104* off 52) took GT across the line with six wickets and five balls to spare, knocking RCB out of the tournament.

With seven wins and as many losses from 14 games, RCB finished sixth on the points table. That was the first time they failed to reach the playoffs since 2019, which was the season they finished last (8th position) on the table.

RCB traded Cameron Green into their squad from Mumbai Indians ahead of the auction for IPL 2024. The Australian all-rounder surely promises to add more firepower to a batting line-up that is highly-acclaimed. Rajat Patidar, who missed the entire season last year due to an Achilles tendon rupture, will be returning to bolster the batting department. The team's prospects will heavily rely on the performance of the experienced trio comprising Kohli, du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell.

The bowling department has come under the microscope as some fans have questioned the release of proven performers like Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazlewood, and Harshal Patel. Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Ferguson, new additions in the seam-bowling department, will have to complement Mohammed Siraj in the pace attack. Reece Topley is another handy option for them. Karn Sharma will have to sperhead the spin-bowling department in the absence of Hasaranga.

Royal Challengers Bangalore take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Friday, March 22, in the first match of IPL 2024.
