Jay Shah provides major update on Mohammed Shami's recovery, reveals his comeback timeline

Star India fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently underwent a successful surgery for his ankle injury in London which troubled him during the entire ODI World Cup 2023. As a result, the speedster has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and will also miss the all-important T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to be played in the West Indies and USA from June 01.

Recently, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Jay Shah gave an update on Shami’s surgery and revealed that the fast bowler is back in India. Shah further gave a tentative date for Shami’s return saying that the 33-year-old will most likely during the home series against Bangladesh. Notably, Bangladesh will tour India for two Tests and three T20Is in September.

"Shami's surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami's return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh," Shah was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Shami was seen in imperious form in the ODI World Cup 2023 after he came in as a replacement for the injured Hardik Pandya in the game against New Zealand. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer took a fifer in his first outing of the tournament and began a wicket-taking spree which saw him top the list of the leading wicket-takers of the tournament.

Shami finished the tournament with 24 scalps to his name from seven innings at an average of 10.7 and an economy of 5.26 with three fifers to his name. His best bowling figures of the tournament came during the semi-final against New Zealand where his 7/57 helped India beat the Kiwis by 70 runs and seal a berth in the final.

KL Rahul begins rehab at NCA

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul has also begun his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru after being ruled out of the England series due to right quadriceps pain. The 31-year-old played the first game of the series in Hyderabad and registered scores of 86 and 22 as India lost the match by 28 runs.

"KL Rahul needed an injection, he has started rehab and is at the NCA," Shah added.

Rahul is expected to be back on the field during IPL 2024 where he will be seen leading Lucknow Super Giants in the upcoming season.
