Sussex are trying their best to secure promotion to Division One of the County Championship and they went one step closer to the target by securing a crucial 15-run win against Leicestershire at the County Ground in Hove.
After being invited to bat first, Sussex managed to put on 262 in the first innings and bundle out their opposition for just 108. In the second innings, Cheteshwar Pujara-led Sussex declared at 344/9 to set Leicestershire an improbable target of 499 runs. The away side were in the chase at 453/6 before Jaydev Unadkat ran through the lower order to finish with figures of 6/94 in 32.4 overs. He was struggling with a sore ankle but his fighting spirit helped him pull through the pain. The 15-run win keeps Sussex in the hunt for promotion as they are currently placed at No. 3 on the points table behind Durham and Worcestershire.
Unadkat received a lot of plaudits for his phenomenal spell with the old ball. The 31-year-old bowled with fire in the first innings as well as finished with figures of 3/23 in 12.4 overs. This was the left-arm pacer's home debut for Sussex, and he helped the team register only their second win in the competition.
Unadkat's Saurashtra teammate, Pujara, did not have a memorable campaign with the bat as he was dismissed for scores of 26 and 23 in the two innings, respectively.
Sussex have a couple of important games on the horizon to round up their campaign. They will head to Derby to take on Derbyshire. The match will be played between September 19-22. Following this encounter, Pujara and Co. will return to their base and host Gloucestershire in what will be their last game of the season. This game will begin on September 26. They will also keep a close eye on the Worcestershire versus Durham game that begins on September 19.
