Ahead of Sri Lanka’s tour to England, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan had stated that Joe Root could surpass legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s run tally in Tests. Though Vaughan had vouched for the veteran to go big when Three Lions toured the subcontinent.
The legendary English batter notched up his 49th international century in the second Test against Lankan Lions on August 29. As a result, Root has signalled the mayhem from home.
Overall, he has 49 tons across formats and is the second-highest among active players. Besides, he also surpassed India captain, Rohit Sharma’s 48 centuries benchmark. Root accrued the coveted figure in 454 innings against Rohit’s 509 innings. He is still miles away from Virat Kohli’s 80 tons in 591 innings.

Root inching closer to Tendulkar's record for most Test runs in career

"Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. With the bat generally, they did not look reckless like they have in the past. They are scoring quickly, but it doesn’t look like their egos are taking over. They are just playing with good sense,” Vaughan had said.
