In a bid to uphold Test cricket's relevance amidst the allure of lucrative T20 leagues, former Australia skipper and world champion Michael Clarke shared insights on its sustenance. Clarke's comments follow former Australia captain Steve Waugh's call for New Zealand to boycott an upcoming Test series against South Africa. The Proteas, opting to prioritize their domestic T20 league, confirmed sending a weakened team, prompting concern for the traditional format's future.

Expressing disappointment, Clarke lamented South Africa's decision to dispatch a depleted squad to face New Zealand after their impressive win against India. Cricket South Africa's ruling prohibiting players contracted to SA20 franchises further contributed to this alteration, leaving the Proteas' lineup notably altered for the February 4 clash in Mount Maunganui.

“It’s sad to see to be honest. I understand South Africa’s reasoning but Test cricket is the pinnacle in my eyes. No domestic competition in the world should come in front of it in my opinion. Playing for your country is the most important thing,” Clarke told ESPN’s Around the Wicket.

“I don’t think there’s too many people around the world that don’t fear where Test cricket’s going. We need to try and find a solution. It seems like a lot of things in life, money seems to be that solution. Let’s start by paying every single Test cricketer the same amount of money in regards to match fee. Let’s not prioritise Australia, England and India. Let’s make sure every country gets that same fee,” the former Australia captain concluded.

Cricket South Africa issues clarification over second-string team for New Zealand tour

Earlier, Cricket South Africa (CSA) affirmed their esteem for Test matches despite prioritizing limited-overs cricket, releasing a statement on Wednesday. With only four Tests played in 2023, the focus tilted towards shorter formats. Uncapped skipper Neil Brand will lead the Proteas Test squad in New Zealand, emphasising the team's shift towards nurturing newer talent for the upcoming series.
