Young Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw has been fined INR 100 by a Dindoshi sessions court in Mumbai for failing to file his reply in a molestation case lodged by social media influencer Sapna Gill. The court imposed the token penalty on September 9, 2025, after Shaw’s legal team repeatedly sought adjournments despite being given multiple opportunities, including a last chance on June 13.
The controversy dates back to an incident on February 15, 2023, at a pub in Andheri, Mumbai. Gill accused Shaw of assault and molestation after a confrontation over a selfie request allegedly turned violent. While Shaw's team has mentioned that Gill and her associates were the aggressors, the case has taken multiple legal twists over the past two years, with both parties presenting contrasting narratives.
Sapna Gill initially approached the police to register a First Information Report (FIR). However, when no action was taken, she moved to the Andheri magistrate's court in April 2023. Although the magistrate accepted the delay in filing, it noted that the allegations were serious enough to merit further inquiry and directed the Santacruz police station to investigate under Section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Dissatisfied with the refusal to register an FIR, Gill later filed a criminal revision petition before the Dindoshi sessions court.

Gill's lawyer accuses Shaw’s legal team of deliberately dragging proceedings
Her lawyer, Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan, has accused Shaw’s legal team of deliberately dragging proceedings. The sessions court itself had warned Shaw in June 2025 that failure to respond would invite consequences. On September 9, Judge S. M. Agarkar noted the continued delay but extended one more chance for compliance, subject to the INR 100 cost payable to Gill.
According to police accounts, Gill’s friend, Shobit Thakur, had repeatedly requested selfies with Shaw around 1 a.m. Shaw initially agreed but later declined further requests, triggering an altercation. According to reports, Thakur was asked to leave the premises, but the dispute escalated when Shaw left with his friend Ashish Yadav. While Shaw allegedly escaped, Yadav was attacked by a group that included Gill and Thakur, leading police to register a case against them. Gill was detained briefly in February 2023 before securing bail.
In her counter-complaint, Gill provided a different version. She alleged that Shaw and Yadav had invited her and Thakur to their VIP table, but matters turned violent when selfies were requested. She accused Shaw of assaulting Thakur and molesting her when she intervened, later filing charges of assault, molestation, and outraging her modesty.
