Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has criticised Delhi Capitals (DC) opener Prithvi Shaw for his poor batting performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). His underwhelming outing with the bat was one of the reasons for DC's five-game losing streak in the IPL 2023. The 23-year-old batter appeared in DC’s six games but only scored 47 runs, including two ducks.
Doull slammed Shaw, claiming the young batter is unfit. The opening batter, according to the Kiwi, has paid the price for his sloth on the pitch. Notably, after back-to-back disappointments, the top-order batter was dropped from the batting lineup against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday, April 24, which Delhi won by seven runs.
“You cannot continue down the same road. If things are not working you have to change it up and he has to understand where he is at in his game. Right now, it’s just not good enough. There was an incident with the run-out situation with Warner in Bangalore.
“He sat on the backside of the bench the whole time when Delhi were fielding and did nothing and later when he came out he was lazy with the running. These little things in the game matter and it comes back to haunt you at times. He has had a poor season and I don’t think he is fit at all and has neither adjusted his game as such. He has paid the price," Doull told Cricbuzz.
Warner wants Shaw to come back stronger
DC captain David Warner stated at the toss that under-fire Prithvi Shaw was was rested and the team had decided to try on other options. The Australian opener, on the other hand, expressed confidence in his teammate and hoped for him to return to the starting lineup soon.
Coming to the match, Delhi defeated SRH by seven runs in IPL 2023 Match 34 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. This was DC's second victory in the current IPL season. They currently have four points and sit at the bottom of the IPL 2023 points table.
