Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar has been confirmed as a guest player for Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. According to a Kashmir Sports Watch exclusive published on October 18, 2026, his first appearance for the side is expected to come in J&K's third Ranji Trophy fixture, which is scheduled against Baroda.
Chahar has been a Rajasthan representative in domestic cricket since 2016. He earned international recognition between 2019 and 2021, appearing in one ODI and six T20 internationals for India. At franchise level, he has featured for Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings across his IPL career. Most recently, he extended his experience abroad by playing county cricket for Surrey in 2025-2026.
Jammu and Kashmir come into the 2026-27 campaign as the reigning Ranji Trophy champions, having claimed their first-ever title during the 2025-26 season.
Why has J&K signed Rahul Chahar as a guest player?
The defending champions identified a specialist leg-spinner as a priority requirement for their bowling attack heading into the new season. Chahar's blend of international exposure and extensive franchise experience across four IPL franchises made him the preferred candidate to fill that role.
J&K had previously brought in Tamil Nadu's Murugan Ashwin under the guest player arrangement. However, Ashwin's involvement with the association was confined to white-ball formats, leaving the red-ball squad without a recognised leg-spin option. Ashwin has since retired from Indian cricket, making the need for a wrist-spin specialist in the Ranji Trophy setup all the more pressing for the association.
"J&K have been looking for a good leg-spinner and since Rahul Chahar brings a lot of experience to the table, he has been signed," a source told Kashmir Sports Watch.
What does Chahar's addition mean for J&K's Ranji Trophy title defence?
Chahar's inclusion gives J&K a credible spin option in the longer format for the first time under the guest player system. His anticipated debut against Baroda in the third match of the season would hand the team an experienced wrist-spinner at a stage when the competition is still taking shape, providing the defending champions with a meaningful bowling resource early in their title defence.
The guest player mechanism has allowed J&K to supplement their squad with proven performers in recent seasons, and Chahar represents one of the more high-profile signings the association has made through that route. Having played at the highest level of franchise cricket and represented India internationally, his arrival adds genuine depth to a side looking to retain the Ranji Trophy title they won for the first time in 2025-26.
