The coveted domestic cricket tournament of India in the form of the Ranji Trohpy got underway on January 5. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made some history-defining decisions in its bid to increase the incentives for Indian players. Now in the same vein, the Indian board has taken yet another step by implementing the 'Player of the Match' medals.

This meant that from now on, after the conclusion of every Ranji Trophy 2024 fixture, the deserving player will also receive a medal in appreciation of his efforts along with the match prize money through cash or cheque. Notably, till 2023, the players used to receive INR 25'000 from the sponsors of the Ranji Trophy. However, it remains uncertain whether there are any positive changes to the current amount given as a cash reward for the 'Player of the Match' for the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024.

"This is to inform you that the BCCI has dispatched ‘Player of the Match’ medals to all the host associations of the Ranji Trophy matches for both Elite and Plate groups. You are requested to hand over the medal (one per match) to the match referee on his/her arrival," BCCI mentioned in a circular delivered to all match referees and state associations as quoted by The Indian Express.

Why did BCCI introduce Player of the Match Medal for Ranji Trophy 2024?

Given the constant efforts the apex board of Indian cricket has been making for quite some time now, showing a progressive attitude and approach towards its domestic talents playing in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 and beyond, the BCCI was reportedly of the view that having an appreciation medal in sight from time to time will motivate the players to maintain their rigorous regime and improve their game over time. Hence, these medals will serve as a constant reminder in the near future and will also become an invaluable part of players' homes as well.

“In other sports, athletes have something to show when it comes to rewards but domestic cricketers were deprived of this. So it was decided to give medals along with prize money rewards after each game. Domestic players will have something to take back home,” a BCCI official explained.
