Ravi Shastri reveals his 'No. 1' between Tendulkar, Gavaskar and Kohli

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has shared his views on the pantheon of Indian batting greats, revealing his vision of the perfect Indian batter. Shastri named his top three Indian batters of all time - Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli.

He ranked Tendulkar at the top and described him as the most complete batter the world has seen. Shastri praised Tendulkar’s technical prowess and adaptability while stating that his records are unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.

“For me, Sachin Tendulkar is number one in the top three. I consider Tendulkar the most complete batsman in the world. He has pure talent and the technique required to play in any condition,” Shastri told Wisden Cricket.

Shastri named Gavaskar as his second pick and praised him as the finest opening batter India has produced. He acknowledged Gavaskar’s courage in facing some of the most fearsome pace attacks during an era of uncovered pitches and minimal protective gear.

Shastri concluded by placing the former Indian captain at number three, highlighting his aggression, and consistency. He even drew a parallel between Kohli and the legendary West Indian batter Viv Richards, known for his dominance at the crease.

“When you watch him bat, you see glimpses of Viv Richards,” Shastri said.

Shastri also noted that each generation has had its own torchbearer who carved out their own legacy. He added that in the same manner, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill possesses the talent and potential to take Indian cricket to the next level.

“Indian cricket has been divided into heroes over the last five decades. From Sunil Gavaskar, the baton passed to Sachin Tendulkar, then Virat Kohli, and, if the hype is to be believed, now Shubman Gill,” Shastri concluded.
