Ravindra Jadeja is one of the most reliable players in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With his excellent all-round skills, he has bagged wins for his team in several matches. Currently, he is an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) setup and had earlier had an eventful title-winning run with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the formative years of the tournament.

Playing 14 games for the first IPL champions, Jadeja struggled to be among runs and wickets. With 135 runs and no wicket in the competition, he concluded his maiden season on a disappointing note. However, the defending champions didn't withdraw their trust from the young allrounder and gave him game time in 13 matches in the next season, which was held in South Africa. In his team’s unsuccessful campaign, young Jadeja racked up 295 runs and six wickets.

After representing RR for the first couple of seasons, Jadeja didn’t feature in the 2010 edition of the league after being subjected to a one-year ban for breaching players’ guidelines ahead of the marquee event. In 2011, the newly-formed Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK) fetched him at INR 4.37 crore at the IPL mega-auctions. Under the leadership of Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene, he delivered some superb all-round shows and won games with his amazing talent.

However, his association with the Tuskers ended after the 2011 season as the franchise got terminated from the league for breaching IPL’s terms of agreement. In 2012, he went under the hammer again to fetch a patron and came out well as noting his talent, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bought him for INR 9.72 crore. Under the guidance of MS Dhoni, he looked confident and delivered a decent performance for Super Kings. The Southpaw ended his maiden season with CSK with 191 runs and 12 wickets.

In 2013, he delivered some fierce match-finishing knocks and helped his team end the league round as table toppers. In the 16th match of the tournament, he played a spectacular innings of 38 runs in 20 deliveries against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to take his team home. It was after this fantabulous knock of Jadeja that Dhoni took to Twitter to give him the widely popular moniker of 'Sir'.

His impressive all-round displays for CSK in back-to-back seasons got him the status of a star player in the league. The veteran scalped 19 wickets for his franchise in 16 IPL matches in 2014 and became the fourth-highest wicket-taker. Riding on his crucial bowling displays, CSK won a lot of games and reached the knockout stage.

In 2015, the dashing all-rounder notched up only 11 wickets and could score 132 runs in 17 matches as CSK ended up as the second-best team of the tournament. After 2015, CSK were handed a two-year ban for spot-fixing and betting case. In his team’s unavailability from the tournament, Gujarat Lions (GL) signed him for the 2016 and 2017 league installments.

Jadeja's role in helping CSK execute one of the tournament's biggest comeback

Representing the Gujarat-based franchise for a couple of editions, Jadeja amassed 349 runs and took 13 wickets in 27 matches. In 2018, CSK returned to the league and lifted the prestigious trophy for the third time. Jadeja grabbed 11 wickets in 16 games in his team’s remarkable title triumph.

After claiming their third title in 2018, CSK entered the 2019 edition with an intention of defending it. To pull off that assiduous task, the team expected their premier players to perform excellently. Jadeja didn't disappoint as with an efficient execution of his role, he fetched 15 wickets in 16 contests at an economy of 6.35.

For the first time, the MS Dhoni-led squad failed to qualify for the knockouts in 2020 and the tested stalwart concluded the campaign with only six wickets. However, the veteran exuded confidence with his bat, scoring 232 runs in 14 games at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 171.85.

In 2021, CSK proved their potential again in the league and lifted their fourth trophy under their dynamic leader MS Dhoni. Playing the competition’s 19th game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he notched up a brilliant fifty that helped his team rout the opponents by 69 runs. The match became memorable for CSK supporters as the left-handed batter created the feat of hitting 37 runs in Harshal Patel’s last over. With this achievement, he equaled Chris Gayle’s record of scoring 37 runs in an over, which the latter had effected against Prasanth Paremeswaran in 2011.

Two days before the start of the 15th IPL edition, the management handed over CSK’s captaincy to Jadeja. However, the transition didn’t work well as CSK had a dismal outing in that edition. Leadership also seemed to have a negative impact on Jadeja’s performance. Leading his team in eight games of the tournament, the veteran could bag only two wickets for his side. Struggling to handle the pressure, Jadeja gave back the team's reins to Dhoni midway through the tournament.
