The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been rigorously working towards the Women’s Indian Premier League, and the board has taken multiple decisions in the past few weeks so as to make the tournament as big as the men’s game. The IPL is celebrated like a festival in India, and the tournament for Women is a huge step towards the growth and development of women’s cricket in not just India, but for all other nations too.

After Viacom 18 won the bid for the Women’s IPL media rights for a whopping INR 951 crore, the league became the second-most expensive women’s sporting league after the Women’s NBA. Speaking only of the cricket industry, the Women’s IPL, with the set price of INR 7.09 CR per game, became the second costliest property after the Men’s IPL.

As per the latest report by Cricbuzz, it is understood that the prize money decided for the league, for the players, is INR 10 crore. Of the pool, the champions will be awarded INR 6 crore, and the finalist will be rewarded INR 3 crore. The team finishing third in the league will receive INR 1 crore and 100 percent of player prize money is to be distributed amongst the players only.

The Women’s IPL is likely to commence in the first week of March, after the conclusion of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup which concludes on February 26 in South Africa. The tournament is set to be a five-team tournament for the first three years, and another team will be added later. Also, unlike the men’s IPL which allows four overseas players in the starting lineup, the women’s IPL will allow five overseas players in the playing combination.

Several existing IPL teams have shown interest in owning a women’s team, and the BCCI has also invited bids. The final five teams will soon be revealed, and the first-ever Women’s IPL will soon get underway.
