Rohit Sharma to lead India in T20 World Cup 2024, confirms Jay Shah

The T20 World Cup 2024 is just over two months away as the mega event is all set to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 01. Ahead of the tournament, there have been widespread talks around India’s squad and captain for the mega event as the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has been planning to select a young team for the tournament.

However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently ended all the speculations around India's captaincy in the T20 extravaganza as he revealed that he’s confident that India will win the tournament under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. While speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, which was formerly called Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Shah praised India for their excellent ODI World Cup 2023 campaign and backed them to go all the way in T20 World Cup 2024.

"People were waiting for me to speak about the ODI World Cup 2023. We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will win the 2024 T20I World Cup under Rohit Sharma,” said Jay Shah during the naming ceremony of Niranjan Shah stadium in Rajkot.

Notably, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hadn’t played a single T20I ever since India’s humiliating loss against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final by ten wickets. The Men in Blue played 25 T20Is post the World Cup till December 2023 and none of Rohit or Kohli featured in a single game.

However, ahead of India’s last T20I series before the World Cup against Afghanistan, the duo were called back to the side. The comeback didn’t start on a memorable note for the Indian as he got dismissed on consecutive ducks in the first two matches of the series. However, he made a brilliant comeback in the final T20I in Bengaluru playing a scintillating innings of 121* (69) as he also became the first player to score five hundreds in the format.

On the other hand, Kohli missed the first game due to personal reasons and played a cameo of 29 (16) in the second T20I. However, he got out on a golden duck in the final T20I of the series. With the two stalwarts almost confirmed to take the flight to the West Indies and USA, the competition among the youngsters will now be intense to fill up the remaining slots for the mega event.
