Sandeep Lamichhane to serve eight years of jail term after being convicted in rape case

Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years of jail term after being found guilty of rape by Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday, January 10. A fine of Rs 3 Lakh has been also imposed on the former Nepal Captain and he has been further asked to pay Rs 2 Lakh as compensation to the victim.

Notably, a complaint was registered against the leg spinner in September 2022 accusing him of raping the victim in August 2021 in a Kathmandu hotel. After a long investigation and court trial, Lamichhane was finally convicted on December 29, 2023, and his punishment was decided by a single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal in the final hearing.

During the trial, the Syangja-born cricketer was out on bail and continued to represent his nation at the international level. He even moved to the Supreme Court to challenge his movement restrictions to allow him to travel to the UAE to participate in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 matches in February 2023. He even played in the Asia Cup 2023 featuring in the matches against both India and Pakistan.

Sandeep Lamichhane is the leading wicket taker for his country in ODIs and T20Is

Lamichhane was widely known as the face of Nepal cricket being the leading wicket taker for his country in both ODIs and T20Is. The wrist spinner has 112 wickets to his name from 51 ODIs at an average of 18.06 and an economy of 4.37 with three five wicket hauls to his name.

In T20Is, he has grabbed 98 wickets from 52 matches at an average of 12.58 and an economy of 6.29. The 23-year-old was also the first player from his nation to participate in the Indian Premier League playing for Delhi Capitals from 2018-2020.
