Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene wants his team to aim for a title in the upcoming T20 World Cup slated to be played in Australia. The host nation after suffering a defeat in their first match of the 2022 Asia Cup showed great character and went on to clinch the cup after thrashing the Pakistani side in the final match.

Meanwhile, Jayawardene has emphasized the fact that Sri Lanka should look to play a fearless brand of cricket in the upcoming mega event and try to clinch the prized World Cup trophy.

I feel that Sri Lanka will play with no fear and no extra luggage: Mahela Jayawardene

"If they take the confidence of what they achieved in the last (T20) World Cup and then now at the Asia Cup, I think they shouldn't be looking at anything other than going all the way and winning the World Cup," Jayawardene told the ICC.

"I mean that's the attitude to have and this is a group I feel that they will play with no fear and no extra luggage on them either so just go out there and enjoy their cricket and play," he added.

The former Sri Lanka batter also emphasized the fact that a lot will depend on how Sri Lanka will adapt to the conditions in Australia.

"The start of the World Cup is going to be very crucial for them as they need to get the momentum and get themselves adjusted to the conditions. But I’m very confident that they are capable of doing it," he added.

Talking about Sri Lanka's campaign during the Asia Cup, the Island nation lost their first match against Afghanistan, but they defeated Bangladesh to enter the super four stage. In the super four matches, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan, India and Pakistan before they beat the Men in Green again in the final match and went on to clinch their sixth Asia Cup title.
