Pakistan defeated South Africa in Match 36 of the T20 World Cup 2022 by a comfortable margin of 33 runs in a rain-affected game at the SCG. Wayne Parnell cleaned up Mohammad Rizwan for just four runs in the very first over while Mohammad Haris took on the Proteas bowling in the powerplay with three sixes and two fours in his 11-ball 28. Skipper Babar Azam struggled yet again in his 15-ball six while Shan Masood could not continue his good form.

Pakistan were desperately looking for a partnership and Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz provided that for a brief period until the latter was dismissed for 28 runs. It also brought Shadab Khan to the crease who went bang bang from ball one and changed the course of the game completely. Iftikhar unleashed his power hitting skills after getting set and he reached a fantastic half-century. Shadab’s quickfire knock proved to a blinder and his 22-ball 52 helped the men in green reach 185 for 9 in their 20 overs.

In reply, South Africa lost two big wickets early of Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw while skipper Temba Bavuma finally managed to find some form. The right-hander hit some fluent boundaries in his 19-ball 36 until Shadab dismissed him with a beauty. The leg-spinner got another big scalp of Aiden Markram in the same over until the rain made an interruption. The Proteas were behind the target in terms of D/L method.

The game was shortened to 14 overs after the rain break and the Proteas were set a target of 142 to win. Heinrich Klassen and Tristan Stubbs had a good start however, wickets kept tumbling and some excellent death bowling from the Pakistan seamers ensured that the men in green fell short of the target by a considerable margin. Shaheen Afridi picked up 3 for 14 with the ball while Shadab Khan's blistering half-century setup the win for Pakistan.
