South Africa and the Netherlands squared off in the 40th match of the T20 World Cup 2022 at the Adelaide Oval. In what was anticipated to be a one-sided game, in favor of South Africa, the Dutch side made it difficult for the proteas to win and put a pause on their semi-final hopes. Netherlands ended their T20 World Cup campaign on a high note, which also increased Pakistan’s chances of making the cut to the knockout stage.

The Netherlands batted first in what was the final Super 12 game for the two sides. The openers Stephan Myburgh and Max O’Dowd shared a 58-run partnership before the former was dismissed in the ninth over scoring a 30-ball 37, which included seven fours. Tom Cooper joined Max O’Dowd at the top order and notched up a quick-fire 19-ball 35 to add some major runs to the scoreboard.

It was then the in-form Colin Ackermann, who smashed a brilliant 26-ball 41 under pressure and helped his side reach 158/4. The Proteas bowlers struggled to take wickets and could not break the Netherlands batters’ momentum. Anrich Nortje registered 1/10 and was the pick of the bowlers. While Aiden Markram picked up one wicket, Keshav Maharaj picked up two wickets while conceding 27 runs.

South Africa's semi-final hopes crushed

The Proteas openers started on a high, but their batting unit came crashing down after the first few wickets. Openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma were dismissed within the powerplay as South Africa could manage to score only 39 runs in the powerplay while losing two wickets. Brandon Glover was at his best as he picked up three wickets in just two overs while giving away just nine runs.

Though it was a dead rubber for the Dutch side, the bowlers did a tremendous job. South African batters struggled to get going as the bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Once the top and middle-order batters were dismissed, the tailenders could not do much. The asking rate and the pressure on the Proteas side kept increasing.

But in the end, the Dutch managed to restrict South Africa to 145/8 during their chase and knocked them out of the tournament. The Proteas had been on the verge of making it to the semi-finals, but the already-eliminated Netherlands won the fixture by 13 runs and put curtains on their campaign at the T20 World Cup 2022.
