The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 got underway in Australia, as the First-Round fixtures kicked off wherein four teams will eventually make it to the group stage of the Super 12. The marquee event will see 16 teams competing against one another for the prestigious title. Furthermore, each team of a group plays the rival side in a round robin fashion to qualify for the semi-finals.

A 15-member squad taking part in the marquee competition was shared by the national sides prior to the commencement of the tournament as directed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). As the matches come thick and fast, high level of fitness needs to be maintained by the players to compete for the title.

Like every edition, even this year’s mega event will feature a few players playing their final tournament owing to their growing age. The management and selectors get to the drawing boards and begin to ideate plans to send the best possible contingent in the month-long tournament.

Running between the wickets and fielding becomes crucial in the crunch moments of the game, hence, teams send a balanced squad that helps them in the long run. Here is where the age factor becomes decisive and certain teams opt to have fresh faces with a few experienced players.

Afghanistan’s 15-member squad has the youngest side among the 16 teams participating in the T20 World Cup 2022. Skipper Mohammad Nabi is the oldest player (37) in the tournament; however, the squad has exciting young sensations who are here to stay. The side’s average age is 23.73 with Mohammad Saleem and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in their twenties and Nabi being the only player in the entire squad in his thirties.

While not all the players have experience playing in the crunch moments of the match, surely the World Cup will hand them a handful. Afghani’s will hope for their young sensations to fire all cylinders and produce something magical as the tournament progresses. The side is well capable of giving the rival teams a run for their money and spoil chances of a semi-final spot.
