Ireland batting coach Gary Wilson is optimistic about their chance against Team India in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The two sides will clash on June 5, at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York.
Ahead of the game, Wilson remarked that India have a very good squad but if Ireland players play their best cricket, they can upset the Rohit Sharma-led side. The 38-year-old noted that there’s a lot of data available on the Indian players and they are going to use them for a fruitful result.
“Yeah, they're (Indian team) a team we know a lot about. There's a lot of data on them. They play lots of games around the world...They are all very good players, that's the bottom line. We have very good players as well, We are going in to win the game and we believe we can do that if we turn up and play our best cricket on the day," Wilson was quoted as saying by Rediff.com.

“We have our plans for all the players. To be honest, our analyst is very diligent. And like I said, there's lots of data out there with the amount of cricket, the Indians play,” he added.
Running between the wickets might be the key: Wilson
Meanwhile, the only match that New York hosted so far turned out to be a low-scoring affair. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted only 77 runs and in reply, South Africa struggled to cross that but eventually did it with only 22 balls to spare. Wilson understands that it is going to be a difficult challenge, especially when India have quality spinners. However, his plan of action is ready as he noted that the Irish players will have to deal with a lot in singles and doubles to put pressure on India.

“We will have to assess the conditions. The ground looks quite big. Running between the wickets might be the key,” Wilson said.
Ireland defeated Pakistan once in less than a month ago and they would carry the confidence against India. However, the team will need to pull up their socks to defeat India as they are one of the favourites to win the tournament.
