‘There has been no talk about it’ - David Warner’s manager says Sydney Test not his last

David Warner will play his 100th Test as Australia and South Africa will lock horns in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26. However, the proud moment has been shadowed by Warner's struggles in the longest format. The 36-year-old could manage scores of 0 and 3 in the two innings in the first Test against South Africa, which has questions on his place in the side.

Warner's average in Tests in 2022 has been just above 20 and he has managed to score just two fifties in the year. The left-hander last scored a Test century in 2020. Meanwhile, his manager James Erskine is confident that Warner will be playing against India next year and the Ashes. 

“No, it won’t be his last Test, I don’t think," Erskine was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald. "It’s news to me if that’s the case. “We’ll just see what happens. The big thing from Davey’s point of view is that he has three young children. If your basic situation is you have got to be away for nine months, or eight months of the year, it is brutal. That will be the decision, I think, depending on how he ends up. He has lots of other interests other than cricket – but there has been no talk about that [retirement].”

Erskine said that it would be hard to blame Warner considering the two unplayable deliveries he got from Kagiso Rabada in the first Test. He added that every great batter has gone through similar phases. 

“He has had a couple of brutal balls. At the end of the day, everyone goes through these quiet spells. You have got to take his career across the board,” he added. “If you talk to all the great players out there, they say he is a great player. We’ll just have to see if he bounces back in Melbourne."
