India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets and 19.3 overs to spare in a one-sided affair at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14, Saturday. Reviewing the match, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was effusive in praise of Rohit Sharma's show in the same game. The India skipper led from the front to accumulate 86 runs under his belt.
Hosting JioCinema’s daily sports show ‘#AAKASHVANI,’ Aakash Chopra gave his take on skipper Rohit Sharma’s majestic performance. “By deciding to bat second, skipper Rohit Sharma took it upon himself to chase whatever score Pakistan managed. There was a possibility that India would be chasing about 300, but Rohit was clear that he was going to do it.
He probably told himself that there was a possibility that the ball might move under lights, but he convinced himself that he was going to take a chance. And after that, the way he batted even the word phenomenal would not do justice to his performance. Short ball six, straight ball six, six over the covers! It was almost humiliating to some of the world’s chosen fast bowlers. So, there’s a saying believe in karma, but when Rohit is around you say believe in Sharma!”
Chopra also admitted that he was worried after Rohit chose to bowl first. “I was surprised after India chose to bowl first. In their previous seven World Cup meetings, they had won six times batting first and once while defending a total. But in Ahmedabad, there was talk that there’s lots of dew in the evenings, and that may be the case. But I swear to god that my heart was in my mouth with the start Pakistan got in the first 10 overs. You had that one opportunity to bat out the team after winning the toss and scoring about 350, and you chose not to utilize it. There’s no chance that Pakistan could have chased it down.”
