Australian skipper Pat Cummins currently has the cricketing world at his feet, leading Australia to the World Test Championship 2023 win first and following it up by clinching the ODI World Cup as well, defeating team India in the summit clash of the marquee tournament.
However, the Australian skipper faced the loss of his mother a few months prior to his winning the ODI World Cup. His mother, Maria, passed away after battling breast cancer. Her illness caused Cummins to visit her in Australia from India during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2023.
To pay tribute to his mother, England’s fan collective, the ‘Barmy Army’ played ‘Maria’ on the trumpet from the West Side Story and posted the clip on social media. Speaking of the clip, Cummins stated that he showed his mother the clip and said that she loved it.
“Cricket’s been a big part of our family forever, and to see the respect and love shown from our oldest rivals, it was really special. I think about her every day; she’s seen a lot of successes before this year, and she’s a huge part of who I am, and I’m sure she would have been really proud,” Cummins said in an interview with ABC Sport.

Mum and dad were always trying to remind us how lucky we are to live in this country: Cummins
Furthermore, Cummins also credited his parents for always keeping him grounded. He highlighted on the face how they emphasized the fact of how lucky they were to be living in the country.
“Mum and dad were always trying to remind us how lucky we are to live in this country and have all the opportunities that we have, but also how we’re just one small, little part of a very big world—and make sure we open our eyes,” Cummins said.
