'Welcome to the very exclusive Handled ball club' - Michael Vaughan's cheeky response to Mushfiqur's bizarre dismissal

On Wednesday, during the Bangladesh vs New Zealand second Test in Mirpur, Mushfiqur Rahim was dismissed for "obstructing the field" after using his glove to push the ball away while defending his off stump.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan trolled Rahim on social media, welcoming him to the "very exclusive Handled ball club" and stating that only proper players are members.

“Welcome to the very exclusive Handled ball club Mushfiqur.. only proper players are members.”, Vaughan wrote on X.

Vaughan himself was dismissed for handling the ball in 2001 whereas this was the first time a Bangladesh cricketer had been dismissed for obstructing the field. 

According to the MCC law, a player is out obstructing the field if, while receiving a ball from the bowler, they intentionally hit the ball with a hand not holding the bat. This rule applies whether it's the first or a subsequent hit. Obstructing the field includes both playing at the ball and hitting it more than once to defend their wicket.

Coming to the match, day One of the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand showcased a remarkable turn of events. Bangladesh, after being bowled out for 172, fought back as spinners Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam dismantled New Zealand, reducing them to 55/5 before bad light intervened.

Earlier, New Zealand's decision to include Mitchell Santner paid off, with him taking a wicket in the morning session. Despite a brief recovery by Bangladesh's Mushfiqur and Shahadat Hossain, Rahim's controversial dismissal triggered another batting collapse. The day ended with Bangladesh leading by 117 runs. Notable performances included Mehidy Hasan's impactful bowling, claiming three wickets for 17 runs. 

Now, moving forward, tomorrow, Kiwi batters would be keen to showcase grit and determination to reach close to Bangladesh's first innings total, while the hosts would be eager to wrap up the Kiwis as quickly as possible to take a significant lead.
