In a remarkable feat, India's U-19 World Cup 2024 campaign notched a significant milestone on Thursday, January 25. Musheer Khan, the 18-year-old talented batter, slammed a stellar century, marking India's first in this edition being played in South Africa.
During a group-stage match against Ireland at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Musheer Khan exhibited his prowess, scoring an impressive 119 off 108 balls. His innings, adorned with four sixes and nine fours, propelled India U-19 to a commanding total of 305/5 in 50 overs.
For those unfamiliar with Musheer Khan, he is the younger sibling of Mumbai's star, Sarfaraz Khan, with a notable age gap of more than seven years. This cricketer is not only a formidable right-handed top-order batter but also a left-arm orthodox bowler. Having made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the previous Ranji Trophy season, Musheer Khan showcased his potential in three matches, accumulating 96 runs and securing two wickets.
His contributions extended beyond domestic cricket, with a standout performance in the U-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he notched 438 runs and claimed the highest number of wickets (22). Musheer Khan further solidified his standing by featuring for India A in a four-nation ODI series, where he played a pivotal role in securing the title with a blistering 47-ball 127 and a 2/53 bowling effort.
Musheer represented Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season, and a dream debut campaign. Playing just three matches, Musheer contributed supremely with 433 runs, at an average of a mind-boggling 108.25 and a scintillating double century versus Baroda. He was also amongst the wickets, delivering some crucial overs with his off-spin.
His season with Mumbai earned him a place in the 2024 edition of the Duleep Trophy for India B. In the Round 1 game of the tournament, the Mumbaikar put a strong case forward with an unbeaten hundred on the first day against India A. His knock came when India B were reeling at 94/7, and Navdeep Saini joined him for carrying the innings forward.
