The 22-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues is going to be one of the most demanded players at the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. The Indian batter made her international debut in 2018 and has managed to score 1575 runs in 75 T20I matches. She also has a total of 394 runs in 21 ODI matches for the Indian team.
She recently opened up about the struggles of her early life in Mumbai and what she is looking forward to ahead of the inaugural WPL season. The 22-year-old narrated how she grew up loving cricket and what inspired her to get into it.
"I just loved playing cricket, and all I wanted to do was that. So, wherever we would get players, you know – a lot of times we didn’t have grounds at that time – especially for a girl playing cricket in India was pretty odd at that time. I would not say it’s not happening. But I personally and my dad, who was my coach, didn’t know that women’s cricket existed. I just played for the pure joy of playing cricket," Rodrigues was quoted as saying on JioCinema.
I’m sure it’s going to be special: Rodrigues on the WPL auction
Rodrigues opened up about a variety of topics, including her role model, legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar, whom she grew up idolising. She also shared how she is feeling ahead of the inaugural WPL auction that is scheduled to be held on February 13.
Talking about the same, she said, "We have always watched the men’s IPL and how the auctions are going to be. I was already glued to it and it is very exciting. So, we always imagine what it would be like for us to experience that kind of moment, but we have not experienced that yet because it has not yet happened. But when it happens, I’m sure it’s going to be special because it’s the first edition of the WPL."
