The 20th match of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 saw UP Warriorz take on Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. UPW, who were coming off an emphatic victory in their previous game, looked to have a similar outing as they took on Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals.
However, Delhi Capitals had a different plan in mind as they clinched the win by five wickets through sensational batting performances by skipper Meg Lanning and Marizanne Kapp. Following UPW’s loss, let us have a look at the talking points from the game and who said what.
Tahlia McGrath’s resilience:
After a decent start to the first innings, it was Tahlia McGrath’s unbeaten knock of 58 runs in just 32 deliveries that propelled UPW to a reasonable score of 138. When the side looked like it was heading towards collapse, McGrath’s resilience came through for the side. However, her knock was in vain, as DC won the game by five wickets.
Alice Capsey’s masterclass:
After an excellent performance in the previous game, 18-year-old Alice Capsey once again put in a masterclass. Scoring 34 runs with the bat, Capsey made a gripping performance with the ball as well, taking three wickets and conceding just 26 runs in four overs.
DC finish top of the table:
After back-to-back victories and Mumbai Indians’ loss in recent matches, Delhi Capitals finished at the group stages at the top of the table with 12 points in eight games. Though MI are level on points, they slipped down to second place due to their inferior net run rate.
Winning skipper Meg Lanning said:
I just wanted the team to win and help the unit. I don't think we were at our best. We were sloppy on the field. Was a respectable wicket. We got off to a flier, and they helped us when it started to turn. It seemed to come nicely with the new ball. They bowled a fair bit of spin towards the back end. We got some depth in batting. We have one big game to go. Hopefully, we will nail that. We will rest for a couple of days before the big game.
Losing skipper Alyssa Healy said:
We also were giving an oppurtunity to players to rest. Credit goes to Ismail. She got a couple of wickets. Gave us a sniff. I couldn't hit it off the square. We were looking for a total to bowl at. The wicket was turning and gripping. We would have loved to bat at a faster clip. Hopefully, we will reflect on what went wrong. We will reflect quickly as well. I am excited to be a part of the finals. DY Patil will be chock-a-block.

Played a different innings yesterday, which was fun. But took some responsibilty today. At number 3. it is about taking on the bowlers. Tried to stay calm under pressure. The duel with Sophie was superb. She is the world number 1 for a reason. First final of the WPL and that is exciting.
