Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Yash Dayal turned out to be the hero for his team as he successfully defended 15 runs in the last over against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3 to secure a narrow two-run win for Rajat Patidar and co. After the match, Dayal's father, Chanderpal Dayal, revealed the support his son received from Virat Kohli throughout the IPL season last year.

Dayal, who was hit five back-to-back sixes by Rinku Singh in IPL 2023, was brought by RCB in the previous season. Kohli, known for advising young players, gave all his support and guidance to Dayal during his tough phase. The bowler has improved aplenty, with his performance in the last two seasons of the tournament.

Last season, he claimed 15 wickets in 14 matches and played a crucial role in RCB's qualification to the playoffs as the team defeated CSK in a must-win game, with Dayal bowling the last over on that occasion as well. Meanwhile, Dayal's father spoke about how Kohli supported his son and helped him rebuild his confidence.

"Virat Kohli has supported him a lot. When Yash joined RCB, Virat would often call him to his room — and sometimes, he would go to Yash’s room himself. They discussed that over [from 2024], and Virat told him one thing: ‘Keep working hard, toofan macha de. Main hoon tere saath. Chinta mat karna. Mehnat karna mat chhodna. Galtiyan karna, par seekhna aur aage badhna.’ Virat has given him a lot of freedom and turned him into a fearless cricketer," Chanderpal Dayal told Times of India.

His calmness was the key in this match: Chanderpal Dayal

Chanderpal also spoke about his son's performance against CSK in the recent last-ball thriller as Dayal managed to defend 15 runs in the last over against a well-set Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube. However, he held his calm and stuck to his plans to get the team past the victory line as RCB won the match by just two runs.

"It’s never over till the last ball is bowled in cricket. Yash is more mature now. I’m sure even the fans had given up — my family did too. But I was confident that Yash would pull it off. And he did. His calmness was the key in this match," added Chanderpal Dayal.
