Preity Zinta just like Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla added a lot of glamor when the Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched. Punjab was the go-to for the Bollywood actress for the first season of the league. Yuvraj Singh was picked as the icon player of the team after his exploits for India in the 2007 T20 World Cup.

It has become a common theme for Punjab Kings to shell money during the IPL Auctions. That hasn’t given them the necessary results in the form of an IPL title win. Interestingly, Punjab Kings had changed their name from Kings XI Punjab to their current avatar.

As we gear up for a new season the cricket-crazy fans of Punjab will hope for luck to smile their way. They will fancy their chances with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Sikandar Raza, and Kagiso Rabada in their team. This year the team have added Harshal Patel, Chris Woakes, and Rilee Rossouw to give it more steel.

Let's look at the Punjab Kings' IPL journey from 2008 to 2024:

IPL 2008 – Journey to Semi-Finals

Yuvraj Singh and his side played well in the first season of IPL when they made it to the final four stages. Punjab Kings finished second in the league table before facing CSK in the Semi-Finals. Shaun Marsh with 616 was the leading scorer while Sreesanth was the highest wicket-taker of his side. Punjab Kings conceded 240 runs during the early season game against CSK which was the most conceded by any team that season.

IPL 2009 – Fifth place finish and Yuvraj Singh creates history

The second IPL held in South Africa saw Punjab Kings finish in the 5th place. This meant that they were out of contention for a place in the semi-finals. It was a disappointing season as the Punjab side had some amazing T20 players. Yuvraj Singh was the top scorer with 340 runs while Irfan Pathan picked 17 wickets. In a notable stat, Yuvraj Singh became the first and only bowler to date to pick two Hat-tricks in the same season.

IPL 2010 – Terrible finish in the league

Yuvraj Singh and Punjab Kings had a season to forget during IPL 2010 season. They finished last in the table despite having some huge names. Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene top scored with 439 runs which also included a century. With the ball, it was Irfan Pathan who once again was the best wicket-taker with 15 scalps that season.

IPL 2011 – Adam Gilchrist Era begins and Paul Valthaty shines

After the IPL mega auctions in 2011, Punjab Kings decided to go for a complete makeover. Adam Gilchrist made his way to the team and was given the captaincy of the side. There was a slight change in fortunes as Punjab Kings finished 5th in the table. The Australian veteran and his side missed out on playoffs by just two points. Shaun Marsh back with the team scored 504 runs to lead the batting charts. Piyush Chawla was the lead bowler with 16 wickets during that season. Punjab Kings total of 232/2 was the highest total for the year during the IPL 2011 season.

IPL 2012 – Missing playoffs by a whisker

Punjab Kings team management and its fans had hoped for a better season in 2012. They finished 6th in the table with 16 points that season. Chennai Super Kings who had 17 points finished 4th in the table. It was disappointing for the Aussie legend as his side fell short by a whisker of a margin. Young Mandeep Singh led the batting charge with 432 runs as pacer Parwinder Awana led the bowling honours with 17 wickets.

IPL 2013 – Mid-season collapse costs Adam Gilchrist a fitting finale

Punjab Kings began their 2013 season well as they seemed to be finally playing like one of the favourites. The best moment that season was David Miller’s century against Royal Challengers Bangalore in a tense game. At the end of the campaign, PBKS finished 6th in the table 4 points adrift of the 4th place. David Miller was the top scored with 418 runs while Azhar Mahmood picked 15 wickets with the ball for Punjab Kings.

IPL 2014 – First and only final appearance till date

Glenn Maxwell, George Bailey, and Mitchell Johnson combined well to help the Punjab Kings reach their first final. IPL 2014 was glorious for the Punjab Kings as they were playing like true champions that season. The Australian trio were lethal as they dominated every team in the league. The final loss to KKR rankles Preity Zinta and all the PBKS fans till date as Piyush Chawla a former PBKS player hit the winning runs. Glenn Maxwell’s 552 runs were the best by a PBKS batter that season. With the ball, it was Sandeep Sharma who led the charge with 18 wickets. Virender Sehwag’s 122 is still the best individual score by a batter against CSK in IPL cricket.

IPL 2015 – Worst-ever points tally

Just as it seemed that Punjab Kings were finally set to take the next step, the team fell over backwards. IPL 2015 saw Punjab Kings bottom of the table with just 6 points from 14 games. This was one of the worst-ever points tally in the history of IPL as the Punjab side were totally decimated. The 138-run loss to RCB during the season was the heaviest loss ever suffered by a team that season. David Miller’s 357 runs were the most by a PBKS batter while Sandeep Sharma picked 13 wickets with the ball.

IPL 2016 – More misery for Punjab Kings

The ninth edition of the Indian Premier League saw Punjab Kings sit in the last position in the table. The team went one better from their 2015 tally of 6 points to make it 8 points for the season. Changes in captaincy and abysmal team management decisions meant that PBKS still were behind the other teams. Murali Vijay became the latest top scorer for PBKS with 453 runs while Sandeep Sharma continued his good form with the ball. The pacer picked 15 wickets to give his side crucial breakthroughs.

IPL 2017- Huge improvements made during the season

After two disastrous seasons, the Punjab Kings made a lot of changes to their side. This bore immediate results as they finished fifth in the table. Yet again they finished 2 points adrift of the playoff places behind KKR who took the 4th spot. Hashim Amla showed his class by scoring 2 centuries that season. The South African was also the top scorer for PBKS with 420 runs from 10 games. Sandeep Sharma picked 17 wickets to become the best PBKS bowler for the 4th year in a row. Punjab Kings 230 vs MI was the highest team total that year. With 453 runs the PBKS vs MI match was also the highest aggregating match of IPL 2017.

IPL 2018 – Yet another collapse ends playoffs hopes

The IPL 2018 season began well for Punjab Kings as at one stage they had won 5 games out of the six they played. With 12 points from 9 games, many hoped that PBKS would make it to the playoff stages. What followed was total hara-kiri as they lost five games in a row to finish 7th in the table. KL Rahul’s 14-ball fifty is still the fastest by a PBKS batter in IPL history. PBKS conceding 245 runs against KKR during the 2018 season was also the most conceded by a team that year. KL Rahul was the leading run scorer for PBKS with 659 runs while Andrew Tye took the purple cap with 24 wickets.

IPL 2019 – New season, same old results

With 5 wins from 8 games, it was hoped that Punjab Kings would easily march into the playoffs. Losing four games in a row at the end of the season came back to the haunt team as they finished 6th in the table. KL Rahul scored a brilliant century to score 593 runs that season while Mohammed Shami picked 19 wickets with the ball.

IPL 2020 – Mid-season revival falls short

Punjab Kings played a team possessed after having lost 6 games out of the 7 they had played. Chris Gayle and KL Rahul then led the charge as PBKS won five games in a row. A chance to qualify for the playoffs was in sight but losses to RR and CSK ended those hopes. KL Rahul took the orange cap with 670 runs as Mohammed Shami picked 20 key wickets for PBKS.

IPL 2021 – Inconsistency costs team a lot

With just 6 six wins in the season Punjab Kings yet again finished 6th in the table. The lack of consistency shown by the team came to cost it dearly. One of the biggest problems for PBKS that year was their inability to take the key moments from the game. KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami were the leaders in the batting and bowling charts for their side. KL Rahul scored 626 runs while Shami picked 19 wickets for the season.

IPL 2022 – Renewed efforts but no improvement

Punjab Kings did show much improvement during the IPL 2022 season but still finished 6th. Shikhar Dhawan was the top scorer with 460 runs while Kagiso Rabada picked 23 wickets. Yet again like the last three seasons PBKS failed to win the key moments despite being in control of many games.

IPL 2023 – Sam Curran and PBKS finish poorly

With just an 8th-place finish, the PBKS fans were left disappointed yet again. With 373 runs Shikhar Dhawan yet again led the charge with the bat in hand. Arshdeep Singh’s 17 wickets were the best by Punjab Kings bowlers. These efforts were not enough as the PBKS side was outplayed in all three facets of the game.

IPL 2024 – What does the new season hold in store?

One can say one thing is certain with PBKS their uncertainty will prevail. This season PBKS have made some smart buys that can help them win the crucial games. If that translates into that elusive title win only time will tell. There is a lot of optimism from fans this year and one does hope that PBKS players can keep the fans' heads held high.
