India and Sri Lanka will square off at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the second ODI of the three-match series. The Men in Blue claimed a dominating 67-run win in the first game on Tuesday, January 10, as Virat Kohli’s century and a 147-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill set India’s foundation strong.

Though Sri Lanka lost the game, skipper Dasun Shanaka emerged as a hero as he notched up an unbeaten century during the chase and batted like a lone warrior till the end. Pathum Nissanka played an 80-ball 72-run knock while opening the batting for the visitors. Later, Dhananjaya de Silva played a composed knock of 47(40), but Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals to keep the batters in check.

Mohammed Siraj got India early breakthroughs by picking up two wickets in the powerplay. As a result, Sri Lanka faced difficulty in finding the right momentum in the game. Young speedster Umran Malik struck thrice, while Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Yuzvendra Chahal ended up with one wicket each, which reduced Sri Lanka to 206/8 in 38 overs.

With just two wickets in hand, Shanaka put up a brilliant show on display as they took the game deep. Though the Indian bowlers failed to pick up the last two wickets, they did a great job in restricting the Islanders from chasing down the target. Shanaka completed his century, but in a losing cause as Kohli’s 45th ODI century helped India earn the win.

As for Sri Lanka, Shanaka is in great touch with the bat as he put in some tremendous performances in the T20I series as well. While he will be looking to lead the team from the front, the other Sri Lankan players would be focusing on improving their game. As for India, the top order did a fantastic job, and would be hoping to replicate the same in the upcoming game as well.

Pitch and Conditions

The short boundaries at Eden Gardens make the pitch a batter's paradise, but as the game progresses, the turf seems to favor spinners. However, seam bowlers also found some success in the most recent games at the ground. The dew factor will come into the scene in the second innings, and as a result, the captain winning the toss might likely opt to bowl first.

Probable Playing XI for IND vs SL 2nd ODI

India

The top-order batters- Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli dominated India’s innings in the previous game, and would be aiming to continue the same form in the upcoming match as well. Of the 373 runs scored by India, the three, cumulatively, scored 266 runs with Kohli hitting a ton. The bowlers too did a great job and thus India is unlikely to make changes to the XI.

Probable Playing XI- Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal

Sri Lanka

Having lost the T20I series, the loss in the first ODI would have hurt Sri Lanka. But they had a lot of positives in the game, especially the in-form skipper Dasun Shanaka. The Islanders put up a fight in the end, and thus there are very slight chances of them making a change to their combination.

Probable Playing XI: Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka
