After defeating England by virtue of the DLS method in their T20 World Cup 2022 fixture, Ireland will be confident when they take on defending champions Australia next. Of the three games, Ireland have lost one against Sri Lanka, won one against England, and their game against Afghanistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Thus, they witnessed pretty much everything at the event.
Australia needs to win all their remaining fixtures to keep the semi-final hopes alive, just like Ireland. Their campaign so far has been similar to Ireland’s. They lost their first game to New Zealand, won their second game against Sri Lanka and their third game against arch-rivals England was abandoned without even the toss happening.
With both teams sailing on the same boat, the losing side will virtually be out of the tournament, until and unless other results end up in their favor. It will be a must-win game for both, and though Australia will be the favorites to win, the unpredictable weather can change the game in a fraction of a second, just like it did against England.
As for Ireland, the batting unit needs to work hard, especially when it’s a team like Australia that has world-class bowlers. Ireland’s bowling unit did a terrific job against England, and the management would be hoping for the players to repeat a similar heroic so as to take down the destructive Australian batting order early in the game. Australia’s top-order struggled in the previous game, but the middle-order batters pulled off a miracle and took the side to a victory.
Pitch Conditions
The Gabba offers an equal surface for both the bat and the ball. The ball comes on to the bat really well early on, and thus the captain winning the toss would look to bat first and take the advantage, rather than chasing. The bowlers will likely get an advantage in the second half. A score around 160 can we a defendable total.
Playing Combinations for AUS vs IRE
Australia
Australia would not like to make many changes as they have the winning momentum. Matthew Wade, who tested for the Covid-19 virus, got enough time to recover as their previous game was abandoned and thus will be expected to be back for the upcoming fixture
Predicted Playing XI: David Warner, Aaron Finch (c), Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood.
Ireland
Ireland will need to be consistent throughout the game, given that the game is against cricketing giants Australia. They have already handed England an upset, and the teams would need to pull off a similar miracle with the bat and the ball to bag a victory.
Predicted Playing XI: Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie (c), Lorcan Tucker (wk), Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Fionn Hand, Joshua Little
