Australia won their semi-final against India by a close margin of five runs to enter the final of a T20 World Cup for a record seventh time in the history of the tournament. On the other hand, the Sune Luus-led South African side stunned the tournament’s inaugural champions England to script history and make their way into their first-ever T20 World Cup final.
The Meg Lanning-led side will now clash against the hosts, on February 26 at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, with the aim to lift their third consecutive T20 World Cup title. The Proteas Women, on the other hand, will be going into the summit clash for the first time ever and will be hoping to lift the prestigious trophy on home soil in front of their fans.
Notably, South Africa and Australia have previously met six times in the shortest format of the game, and all six encounters came during one or the other edition of the T20 World Cup. The two sides recently faced each other during the group stage game of the tournament, where the Women in Yellow defeated the Proteas women.
The hosts will be in formidable touch, given their winning momentum from the recent semi-final game. Australia are undefeated in the tournament thus far securing five consecutive wins. The upcoming finale is expected to be a mouth-watering contest, and it will be interesting to see if South Africa lift their maiden title, or if Australia defend their title, again, to lift the cup for a record sixth time.
Pitch and Conditions
The Newlands surface in Cape Town typically favours spinners, but seamers have also benefited from the favourable circumstances. The most recent game on this surface, the semi-final between South Africa and England witnessed seamers dominating the second innings.
