England’s hangover from the T20 World Cup triumph seemed evident as they lost the first of the three ODIs against Australia by six wickets at the Adelaide Oval. Southpaw Dawid Malan registered his career-best score of 134 only to end up on the losing side as David Warner, Travis Head and Steven Smith all struck half-centuries to help the Aussies in reaching the target of 288 in 46.5 overs.

As international cricket resumed after the T20 extravaganza, new Australian skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to field first. Jason Roy, who got dropped from the recently concluded marquee event, continued his bad form as he fell for just six. His opening partner Phil Salt amassed 14 while James Vince managed only five. England’s innings were all about Malan, who brought up his second ODI century. His knock included 12 fours and four maximums in 128 deliveries. Captain Jos Buttler made 29 while David Willey contributed with 34 off 40 as the visitors reached 287/9 in 50 overs. For the hosts, captain Cummins and Adam Zampa snared three scalps each.

In reply, Warner and Head’s love affair with Adelaide continued as the duo shared a 147-run opening stand. In three innings, the pair have accumulated 456 runs at an average of 152.00 at the venue. Warner got dismissed for 86 while Head was sent back to the pavilion for 69. Smith then controlled the Aussie innings with stability and composure as he remained unbeaten on 80 off 78 to guide his side to a clinical victory at the end. For his outstanding century, Malan grabbed the Player of the Match award despite ending on the losing side.
