New Zealand ended their down under jinx in style as they defeated defending champions Australia by a massive margin of 89 runs in the opening encounter of the Super 12 round in the T20 World Cup 2022. The Kiwis registered their first victory in international cricket on Australian soil since 2011 as they broke the hoodoo in some fashion. Devon Conway smashed an unbeaten 92* while Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner took three scalps apiece in a rematch of last edition’s final.

Speaking about how the opener of the WC between Trans-Tasman rivals panned out, skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to field first. Young opener Finn Allen, who kept Martin Guptill out of the playing XI, set the tournament on fire straight away as he slammed 42 off just 16 with five fours and three maximums. He set the tone of the Kiwi innings right from the first over against Mitchell Starc with 14 runs coming off it.

Captain Kane Williamson made a run-a-ball 23 with Conway continuing to score runs. James Neesham struck a quickfire 26 off 13 as the BlackCaps reached a huge total of 200/3 in 20 overs. Conway carried his bat with his knock of 92* off 58 which included seven fours and two sixes.

Chasing 201, the hosts lost David Warner early for just five while Finch made only 13. The Kiwi bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals as the Kangaroos lost their plot in their pursuit of a massive target. Out-of-form batter Glenn Maxwell top-scored for his side with his innings of 28 while others struggled against a top-quality New Zealand bowling attack.

The BlackCaps were on fire on the field as well as Glenn Phillips took a stunning and unbelievable catch to get rid of Marcus Stoinis. Southee gave away just six runs in his 2.1 overs with Santner going for 31. Trent Boult took 2/24 as the Aussies got bundled out for just 111 in 17.1 overs. With this win, New Zealand opened their account in a spectacular way in the World Cup as the hosts suffered a shocking defeat. For his magnificent match-winning innings, Devon Conway won the Player of the Match award.
