Australia thrashed South Africa by six wickets to win the first of the three-match Test series in just two days at the Gabba in Brisbane on Sunday, December 18. Chasing a target of 34 on the second day of the game, the Aussies lost four wickets, all to Kagiso Rabada, but eventually sealed the opening encounter to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Travis Head was declared the Player of the Match for his knock of 92 off 96 in the first innings.

Earlier, skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl first. Wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne top-scored for his side with his innings of 64 in the first innings. Speedster Mitchell Starc and spinner Nathan Lyon picked up three wickets each as the Proteas got bowled out for 152. In reply on the back of Head’s innings, the Kangaroos reached a total of 218, and took a lead of 66. Rabada picked up four wickets in the first innings as well while Marco Jansen took three.
