An all-round display from Abhishek Sharma along with ruthless power-hitting from Heinrich Klassen followed by classical bowling from Mayank Markande handed Sunrisers Hyderabad a 9-run win over Delhi Capitals in match number 40 of Indian Premier League 2023.

The Aiden Markram-led side won the toss and opted to bat first, however, they received an early blow as Mayank Agarwal departed in the third over off Ishant Sharma. Rahul Tripathi then joined hands with Abhishek Sharma as the duo added 23 runs for the second wicket. Abhishek Sharma kept piling up runs at one end, but wickets kept falling at the other end, and the latter soon, rose to his third IPL fifty.

Mitchell Marsh rattled the middle order with his lethal bowling display, picking the wickets of Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, and Harry Brook. However, Abhishek Sharma amassed 67 runs that included 13 boundaries before getting dismissed by Axar Patel, and all of a sudden SRH were left reeling at 109/5 in the 12th over. The duo of Heinrich Klassen and Abdul Samad led the recovery by adding 53 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Micthell Marsh dismissed Abdul Samad.

Klaasen toyed the bowlers at the end with his ruthless power-hitting as he registered his maiden fifty in IPL. Cameos from Abdul Samad (28 off 21) and Akeal Hossain (16* off 10) along with Klassen’s (53* off 27) masterclass down the order helped SRH post a huge total of 197/6 in 20 overs. Mitchell Marsh was the pick of bowlers for his spell of 4/27 in 4 overs.

Chasing 198, David Warner fell early without scoring as Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck on the second ball. Phil Salt and Mitchell Marsh kept the chase lively by adding a century partnership for the second wicket. Both the batters rose to their respective fifties in the course of the partnership.

Mayank Markande broke the good-going partnership. Abhishek Sharma and Akeal Hossain then joined hands with Markande as the trio took three wickets in three overs, leaving Delhi in trouble at 125/4 in the 14th over. From thereon, bowlers came back strong with a few tight overs to help SRH defend the score, defeating DC by a margin of 9 runs
