England began their ongoing T20 World Cup campaign with a convincing five-wicket victory over Afghanistan in Perth. Sam Curran was the star performer for Jos Buttler and his side as he picked up a five-wicket haul to bundle out the Afghans for just 112. On the other hand, Ireland suffered a hammering by nine wickets from Sri Lanka in their Super 12 opener in Hobart. The two sides will meet in Match 20 of the Super 12 round in Group 1 on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the MCG.
Speaking about England’s win over Asian side Afghanistan, Curran scripted a special feat with his spell of 5/10 in 3.4 overs. He became the first-ever English bowler to bag a five-wicket haul in T20 internationals. Chasing just 113 to win, Buttler’s team did lose five wickets in the process but Liam Livingstone remained unbeaten on 29 off 21 to get the job done for his side in 18.1 overs. Earlier, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood also chipped in with two wickets apiece to puncture Afghanistan’s innings.
The Irish side in their first contest of the main draw managed to post only 128/8 against Asia Cup winners, Sri Lanka, with Harry Tector top-scoring for his side with his knock of 45. All the six Lankan bowlers were amongst the wickets as they restricted Ireland to below 130 before Kusal Mendis smashed 68 not out to seal a comfortable victory for the Lankan Lions. Andrew Balbirnie’s men would look to put on a better show and give some fight to a strong and dangerous-looking English side who are hot favorites for the championship.
