India vs England, T20 WC 2022 Semi-Final 2 Stats Review: Virat Kohli’s landmark, Jos Buttler-Alex Hales record stand and other stats

Jos Buttler and Alex Hales shared an unbeaten 170-run opening stand as England humiliated India by a ten-wicket defeat in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide. In pursuit of a 169-run target, Buttler smashed 80 off 49 while Hales hammered 86 off 47 as the duo reached the target in just 16 overs to hand India a massive drubbing. 

Speaking about how the crunch encounter panned out, Buttler won the toss and opted to field first. KL Rahul struggled against a big opposition yet again as he fell for just five. Skipper Rohit made 27 before falling prey to Chris Jordan, who played his first game of the tournament. Virat Kohli stretched his red-hot-form as he brought up his 37^th half-century in the format, however, Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t repeat his heroics from the previous games, with the batter dismissing for just 14 off 10. Hardik Pandya looked at his destructive best as he mustered 63* off just 33 to help India in posting a challenging total of 168/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, it was one-way traffic as England’s opening pair of Buttler and Hales made a complete mockery of the target in a high-octane clash. The English captain smacked nine fours and three maximums while Hales hit four fours and seven maximums to annihilate the India. With this, England dumped India out of the final race as they fixed the date with Pakistan for the summit clash on November 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a repeat of the 1992 ODI World Cup. For his counter-attacking unbeaten fifty, Hales grabbed the Player of the Match award.

4008 – Virat Kohli became the first-ever batter to achieve the feat of 4000 T20I runs.

2073 – Alex Hales completed 2000 runs in T20 internationals. He became the third England batter after Jos Buttler (2576) and Eoin Morgan (2458) to achieve the feat.

170* - Hales and Buttler registered the highest partnership of 170* for any wicket in T20 World Cups. They surpassed Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw’s tally of 168*,, which came in this edition against Bangladesh.

639 – Kohli has now scored the most runs against England in the shortest international format. He surpassed Aaron Finch, who has 619 runs against the English side.

3 – Hardik Pandya became the third Indian player to get out hit-wicket in T20Is. The other two are KL Rahul against Sri Lanka in 2018 and Harshal Patel against New Zealand in 2021.

2 – Buttler and Hales also recorded the second-highest partnership of 170* for England in T20 internationals. Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan to the list for their 182 run-stand against New Zealand in Napier in 2019.

4 - Kohli scored his fourth 50-plus knock of this WC, which is the joint-highest in a single edition. Kohli himself in 2014, Matthew Hayden in 2007 and Babar Azam in 2021 scored four 50-plus knocks in a single edition of the T20 WC.

3 – For the third time, England scripted a ten-wicket victory in T20Is. They won by the same margin against West Indies at The Oval in 2011 and New Zealand in Wellington in 2013.

9 – Kohli has smashed the most 50-plus scores (9) in Australia in the format. Aaron Finch and David Warner are tied in the second position with eight such scores.

170* - Buttler and Hales recorded the highest stand (170*) against India in T20 World Cups. They went past Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s partnership of 152* in Dubai in the 2021 edition.

22 – Kohli has now slammed the most 50-plus scores (22) in World Cups (ODI & T20). He edged past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 21.

5 – Buttler has slammed the most 50-plus scores (5) for England in T20 WCs. Hales and Kevin Pietersen are joint-second for four such scores.

211 – Kohli has amassed 211 runs at an average of 211.00 with three half-centuries and the best score of 89* in three innings of the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

7 – Hales has now hit the most sixes (7) for England in a T20 WC match. Luke Wright against Afghanistan in 2012, Hales against Sri Lanka in 2014, and Buttler against Sri Lanka in 2021, all struck six maximums each.

200 – Kohli reached his 200^th 50-plus score across formats. He became the second Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar (264) to achieve the milestone.

2 – England skipper Buttler and Hales also scripted the second-highest stand (170*) for any wicket against India in the format. De Kock and David Miller are in the top spot for their 174* partnership in Guwahati this year.
