The greatest rivalry is back as India and Pakistan are all set to lock horns in their respective opening match of the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup on a Super Sunday, October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. The arch-rivals face each other in Match 16 of the Super 12 round in Group 2 in a blockbuster and mouth-watering clash on a festive weekend. Notably, both sides met just a year ago in the WC in Dubai where Pakistan inflicted a 10-wicket loss on team India.
Heading into the tournament, the Men in Blue secured back-to-back bilateral series victories over Australia and South Africa on home soil. On the other hand, the Babar Azam-led Pakistani side won the recently concluded Tri-Series Final against New Zealand in New Zealand. Speaking of the playing XI, Mohammed Shami replaced the injured Jasprit Bumrah in the squad and should slot in the final 11 straightaway. India would also look to select one of Axar Patel and R Ashwin in the high-voltage encounter.
Pakistan welcomes their lethal fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, who terrorized the Indian side in last year’s competition. Both teams would look to start their respective campaigns on a high with a victory at the historic ground, the ‘G’. The Men in Green have a relatively bad record against their rivals in World Cups but the last victory in 2021 should motivate them heading into this year’s clash. The stakes are high as the Asian giants are all set to renew their oldest rivalry this time down under.
