Skipper Aaron Finch found form as he smashed 63 off 44 with five fours and three sixes to help Australia in winning the Match 31 of the T20 WC 2022 against Ireland by a 42-run margin in Brisbane. Wicketkeeper- batter Lorcan Tucker’s lone efforts of 71 unbeaten runs off 48 went in vain as the Irish suffered their second loss in the Super 12 round.
Speaking about how the match panned out, captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss, and Ireland elected to field first. David Warner’s lean patch in the World Cup continued as he managed to score only three off seven. Mitchell Marsh played a quickfire innings of 28 off 22 with two fours and as many maximums before falling prey to Barry McCarthy, who ended up with figures of 3/29. Glenn Maxwell’s poor form also stretched as he made just 13. Marcus Stoinis struck 35 off 25 with the Aussies reaching a big total of 179/5 in 20 overs.
In reply, skipper Balbirnie went cheaply for just six while destructive Paul Stirling amassed only 11. Barring Tucker, no Irish batter got going as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Tucker played a lone hand of 71* off 48 with nine fours and a maximum. Except for Josh Hazlewood, all the Aussie bowlers were amongst the wickets as they bundled out Ireland for 137 in 18.1 overs. With this win, the Kangaroos moved up to the second spot in the points table below New Zealand. For his match-winning captain’s innings, Aaron Finch grabbed the Player of the Match award.
