T20 WC 2022 Stats Round-up: Rohit Sharma’s feat, Pakistan’s first T20I win on Australian soil, and other stats

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe began the triple header on Sunday, October 30 with a thriller as Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangla Tigers defeated the Zimbabweans by three runs on the final delivery of Match 28 in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Brisbane.

After two consecutive losses, Pakistan bounced back with a six-wicket win over the Netherlands, their first victory in T20Is down under. The third and final clash of the Super Sunday witnessed South Africa handing India their first defeat of their (India's) campaign by five wickets in Perth.

Speaking of the Bangladesh-Zimbabwe encounter, Bangladesh opener Najmul Hossain Shanto registered his maiden half-century in 15 innings as he top-scored for his side with his knock of 71 off 55. Afif Hossain’s cameo of 19-ball 29 helped Shakib’s side in reaching a total of 150/7 in 20 overs. In reply, the Zimbabwean top-order struggled against pacers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman as the first three batters bagged single-digit scores.

In-form player Sikandar Raza got out for a duck but veteran batter Sean Williams got going in style. The latter smashed 64 off 42 with eight fours before getting run out. Mosaddek Hossain kept his cool to defend 16 off the final over to seal a thrilling victory for his team. Taskin Ahmed won the Player of the Match award for his spell of 3/19 in four overs.

In the Pakistan-Netherlands game, the Dutch side, after batting first suffered miserably as they managed to post only 91/9 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Spinner Shadab Khan was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with his spell of 3/22 in four overs. Chasing just 92 to win, skipper Babar Azam’s lean patch continued as he got run out for just four.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan amassed 49 off 39 as the Men in Green finally recorded their first win in the tournament. Shadab, for his match-winning spell, grabbed the Player of the Match award.

The triple header ended with India facing the Proteas and the former faced the first loss of their ongoing World Cup campaign. Pacer Lungi Ngidi broke the back of the Indian batting line-up as he took key scalps of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli for just 15, nine, and 12 respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav continued his breathtaking form as he smashed 68 off just 40 balls with six fours and three maximums. Wayne Parnell took 3/15 as no other Indian batter contributed, eventually managing to post only 133/9 on the board.

Arshdeep Singh made early inroads by picking up scalps of in-form batters Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw for one and zero respectively.

The Proteas struggled at 24/3 but half-centuries from Aiden Markram and David Miller made sure the deal was sealed for the Rainbow nation. The former scored 52 off 41 while Miller remained unbeaten on 59 off 46 till the final over to script a win. For his solid spell of 4/29 (4), Ngidi won the Player of the Match award.

65 – Mohammad Rizwan completed 2500 runs in T20 internationals in 65 innings. He is the second-fastest to the feat after Babar Azam who got there in 62 innings.

2011 – For the first time since 2011, South Africa defeated India in an ICC tournament. They beat the Men in Blue in the 50-over World Cup that year.

101 – David Miller reached the milestone of 100 maximums for South Africa in T20Is. He became the first Protea batter to achieve the feat.
